Installation

Follow the guide below to install the required mods and play on our server!

  • Quick Start

Get up and running in 10 easy steps with verbose step-by-step instructions

    INSTALL NOW
    ServerSyncClient.zip (529 KB)

In order to play, we require you to install a few mods in order to enhance the experience for all players. Don’t worry, these do not fundamentally change the game in any way and will all be taken care of automagically by our ServerSync installer. You only need to remember to run the ServerSyncClient.exe launcher before starting the game and trying to connect. If you do not, you will get errors and not be able to connect.

    1. Download ServerSyncClient.exe and place the files right into your Valheim game folder. (Ex: C:\Steam\steamapps\common\Valheim\). You can also right-click Valheim in your Steam App Library and choose Manage > Browse Local Files to get their quicker. This is the app that will sync over our mods.
      • If you are asked, the password is the same as the game server password.
      • Download the zip file, right-click and choose Extract All... to open the .zip.
    2. Additionally, place the serversync-client.json configuration file in the same location. If done correctly, both files should be in the exact same folder as your valheim.exe file.
    3. You will also need to have Java installed on your computer to run the patcher. In most cases, you will already have it as it is a free dependency used by Windows for many other programs, but if you get a warning message that you don’t have Java installed, you can download and install it from: https://www.java.com/download/ie_manual.jsp.
    4. Double-click ServerSyncClient.exe to open it and launch the app.
    5. Select the Options tab on the left, and ensure the options are set exactly the same as provided with the installer, you will only need to do this the first time you set it up. These settings are then stored into the file called serversync-client.json for future use. For convenience, the installer ships with a configuration file by default, so just confirm the settings and you’ll be on your way!
      • The options are saved for you right away when you switch tabs. Let’s go to the Sync tab now.
    6. (Optional) Next, back up your mods! You can make a backup manually by copying the entire BepInEx folder. Although, you really only need to worry about your mod and config folder! If you don’t care about that, you can skip this step completely and proceed to step 7. For more info, see the FAQ section.
    7. In the Sync tab, at the bottom of this window, please be sure the IP Address and Port are still correct, matching the above values, and change them to match if they are not.
    8. Select the Sync button at the bottom and wait. This will sync your mod list with the server. This will only take a long time after major updates and the very first time you run it as it is loading all the mods and downloading them to your computer. From then on, it will do a comparative check and update only what is necessary.
    9. Once the patcher says Done you will see a table of all the operations it has performed. You can inspect these mods yourself or start playing and discover them as a secret. Hit the X to close out the ServerSyncClient.
    10. Congrats! You’re done. You need only perform steps 4, and 8 from now on to enjoy the game. Just launch the game from Steam normally and start playing.
  • Advanced Installation

Some advanced steps you may wish to optionally perform
    • Before installing mod you can backup your game folder at C:\ProgramFiles\Steam\SteamApps\Common\Valheim. We suggest making a .zip file so you can just delete the game folder and restore the .zip file if need be.
    • This game employs SERVER CHARACTERS which means your character file will be backed up to our server. Before connecting, it is recommended to backup your character file. THIS IS NOT STORED IN YOUR GAME DIRECTORY AND MUST BE BACKED UP SEPERATELY!! The character files are stored in one of two places:
      • If you use the Steam Cloud, they are stored in the cloud here: C:\ProgramFiles\Steam\userdata\[your userid]\892970\remote\characters\.
      • If you do not use the Steam Cloud, your character will be saved locally here: C:\Users\[your username]\AppData\LocalLow\IronGate\Valheim\characters\
    • Unless you remove the mods, they will carry over into singleplayer. It’s recommended if you play a singleplayer world that you care about, or that you don’t want to introduce mods to, that you backup your local worlds folder. THIS IS NOT STORED IN YOUR GAME DIRECTORY AND MUST BE BACKED UP SEPERATELY!! The world files are stored in one of two places:
      • If you use the Steam Cloud, they are stored here: C:\ProgramFiles\Steam\userdata\[your userid]\892970\remote\.
      • If you do not use the steam cloud, your worlds will be saved here: C:\Users\[your username]\AppData\LocalLow\IronGate\Valheim\worlds_local
    • Also note that AppData is a hidden folder on Windows computers and you must be viewing hidden files to be able to see it.
    • Also note that you must substitute your own userid and computer username in the paths above, and adjust based on where you installed the game.
  • Updating NEW

As of version 1.2.0 there is a NEW method to performing updates:

The easiest and foolproof way to process updates…

    1. Open Steam Library and right-click on Valheim.
    2. Choose Manage > Browse Local Files…
    3. Open the folder BepInEx.
    4. Delete the config folder.
    5. Delete all plugins folders EXCEPT any of your custom mods that you may have installed.
    6. Run ServerSyncClient.exe as normal above.
