Frequently Asked Questions

Do you have any basic troubleshooting tips?

Remember that from now on:

  • You must have an up-to-date mod folder to be able to play on our server, otherwise you will get an Invalid version error.
  • If you make changes to any files or folders in the mods folder you will not be able to play the multiplayer server until you Sync.
  • Every time there is an update to the core mod list, you will need to run the ServerSyncClient.exe and hit Sync BEFORE starting your game to ensure your mod list and config files are up to date.
  • If ServerSyncClient.exe ever needs an update, you will find it in the StarHeim folder. Simply overwrite your ServerSyncClient.exe with the one provided in this directory, after running the old ServerSyncClient first, yes thats confusing, see updating ServerSyncClient question below.
  • And final note and clarification, mods will be removed from your game if they are not in the approved list. You will not be able to play if you make changes to config files.
What are the System Requirements?

If you can play Valheim, you should be able to play our mod, you may have framedrops in certain areas based on how users utilize the new assets.

You will need about 1.5 GB of free space to download all the mods.

What is ServerSync?

ServerSync, and by extension its executable ServerSyncClient.exe, is a small patcher which will sync your local computer Valheim mods and config folder with the Servers, ensuring the two match exactly. This patcher only has permission to your Valheim game directory, and only runs when you tell it to. It downloads all the mods the first time you play, and from then only downloads new or changed files. It must always be run manually.

How can I play on singleplayer with my own mod selections?

You will be required to use our specified mod list in order to play on our server. To play on your own in singleplayer or on other servers with different mods, you will need to manually manage your directories, or use a mod manager to handle different profiles. Delete the contents of your BepInEx mods and config folder that contain all our mods, install whatever mods you want, and play. Want to play with us again? Simply rename or otherwise backup the BepInEx folder and run the ServerSync to download our mod list. Want to play singleplayer again? Delete the existing BepInEx folder containing our mods and restore your backed-up personal folder.

Nothing happens when I click ServerSyncClient?

The ServerSync app may not have the proper rights to the mod directory. Try and right-click ServerSyncClient.exe and choose Run As Administrator.

Additionally, please ensure you have Java installed as outlined in the installation section.

Additionally, if you haven’t already, restart your computer to be sure it isn’t crashed in the background.

What mods are required?

The required mods will be downloaded automatically. You can always find an updated list of all included mods in this readme file for reference. Please note you must have ALL mods enabled and installed, and their configuration must match the server.

Can I use Nexus or Thunderstore mod managers?

Yes and no. You can utilize these tools if you create a new “profile” for the game. You will then need to switch profiles in order to avoid game files getting overwritten when running our ServerSync.

No manual mod management is needed when running StarHeim with our ServerSync mod.

How do I read version numbers?

Crash course, this file has many version numbers, generally formatted as ###.###.###. which is the way most software handles updates. MAJOR VERSION . FEATURE VERSION . MINOR VERSION

As an example, a full release would be 001.000.000, but we generally don’t show the three zeros, so we would call it version 1.0.0.

  • The first digit represents a major update, something that defines or changes the software in major ways.
  • The second number indicates a feature or security update, possibly a tested bugfix.
  • The third set of numbers represents minor releases, development or testing versions, perhaps a minor text change.

You can also see abbreviations like alpha, beta, and release candidate (rc). These are generally confusing and we will stick strictly to numbers for our own releases, but since mods come from different authors who may use different standards, we must mention it.

Unlike some software where you don’t need to update Feature Versions or Minor Versions, you will have to install all updates to our modlist in order to play.

How do I know if I have the latest version of all mods?

You will not be able to run the game without the latest version. You will receive an error and will not be able to connect to the game and it will generally tell you why. It will be announced in the Discord if there is an update.

You can also run the ServerSyncClient any time without any penalty, so you may wish to do that anytime you get an error as a first troubleshooting attempt. If there are no updates, it just won’t download anything.

Also this site is updated every time there is a new version, at the very top on the homepage it will say Welcome to StarHeim [version] to indicate the version number.

I don’t like X mod!

The mod selection process was done very carefully, trying to pick only singular all-in-one mods, that are well-documented, and frequently updated mods and were thoroughly tested not to introduce bugs and glitches into our world. We have those annoying Greyling pests… we don’t need anymore! If you don’t agree with one, feel free to bring it up and a reason why and we can consider removing it.

What exactly are optional mods?

Optional mods are generally not installed by the server. There are a few exceptions, (PlantEverything) but mods like Vortex are things which the server has “greylisted” meaning it allows the mod but does not push it to clients.

You are responsible for installing and managing any optional mods manually. Simply place the files in BepInEx/plugins manually. You will also need to update these files manually on your own, as the optional mod list is updated ensuring you have the proper greylisted version as specified.

When running serversync you may receive errors for any optional mods you have installed but you can ignore them. When you connect to the game you will be allowed to connect because they have been greylisted.

A mod was removed but it is still on my computer!

For security purposes the ServerSync application only has the ability to ADD mod files and folders specifically within the folder it operates in.

So we can’t delete anything on your computer!

This means that if a mod is removed, you will need to delete it or you may receive “Unapproved mod” errors in-game. You can easily delete your whole BepInEx folder and allow us to download the folder anew.

What does the Anti-Cheat mod do?

This mod will run an integrity check on the game files every so often. This will ensure no changes are made to configuration files or you will not be able to connect, or will be kicked from the game.

It will also monitor common values in the game to check for item spawning and remove large quantities of items that it would impossible to obtain legitimately.

As a whole, it ensures everyone has a fun and enjoyable and more importantly fair experience whether they play every day, or a few times a month.

How can I spawn in items?

The anti-cheat will prevent you from spawning in items, or bringing items into the game from single player worlds by design as that is not the intention of the game and selfishly ruins the economy and balance and enjoyment of other players.

Can I suggest a mod?

Sure! Feel free to send over any mod links and we can investigate. Our mod selection process goes for high-quality mods that have active development, that don’t have a ton of bug reports and specifically ones that add to the game while not turning the game into something it isn’t or allowing people to cheat the game as it was designed.

Additionally, as a general rule, the mod should be standalone and should not require any other mods or frameworks other than the core frameworks that many other mods utilize.

There is a list on the mod page of which mods have been looked at previously, and reason why they were rejected, so you don’t suggest a mod we’ve already considered. On the Mod page you will find a BLACKLIST of such mods.

How do I update ServerSyncClient?

There most likely shouldn’t be necessary updates for the client but if there ever is one, the process to update is as follows:

  • Run your existing ServerSyncClient and hit Sync to download the latest version of all files.
  • Inside this Starheim folder, you will always find a copy of the latest ServerSyncClient.exe
  • Close ServerSyncClient and copy and paste the ServerSyncClient.exe from the Starheim server to replace the one in your game’s root folder.
  • It’s a good practice to then run the ServerSyncClient one more time to ensure everything is updated.
  • Note: It is not recommended to use the “Update” button in ServerSyncClient. Only the Sync button and manual updating.
What happens after game updates?

After game updates, there will be chaos.

We suggest downgrading the game to the last previous build by right-clicking the game in Steam and choosing Properties… > Betas > and choosing “defaault_old Previous Stable Build” until you have a notice from us that it is OK to update.

Apparently, after game updates, many mods will break and simply removing them from the server will remove them from save files. Thus, the only answer is to wait until the mod is updated by the author.

How do I join?
Currently, this server is invite-only. However, we may install a public server if there is enough interest. You can ask to join in the discord.
